Gabriel Peters-Lazaro

Summer 2013 Fellow

As a media arts scholar and practitioner, Gabriel Peters-Lazaro’s research is concerned with how digital media technologies function as educational tools for early childhood learners.  He has explored such inquiries through an ongoing project called the Junior AV Club (think 4-year-olds with video cameras), and plans to continue them in his dissertation work, which seeks to form productive links between early learning classrooms and informal learning environments through an integrated system of digital media production and sharing.  Peters-Lazaro received his B.A. in Film Studies from UC Berkeley, completed his M.F.A in Film Directing and Production at UCLA, and is a Ph.D. candidate in USC’s Media Arts + Practice (iMAP) program. From 2008, he has been a full-time staff person and teacher at USC’s Institute for Multimedia Literacy where he is the media design lead and an instructor for IML 500 – Digital Tools and Tactics. His work at IML includes researching and developing new approaches to pedagogy and digital scholarship across a wide variety of subject areas in collaboration with scholars and organizations from all parts of USC and beyond. He is also an avid surfer.
